What to Approve in a Close-Joint Wall Panel Mock-Up

A practical mock-up checklist for grooved aluminum honeycomb panels: front reveal, back groove, connector, corners, lighting and agreed installation evidence.

Approve an assembly, not a loose color chip

A finish chip answers a color or texture question. It does not show how two panel edges meet. For a close-joint specification, ask for two representative panel pieces assembled with the intended connector and a relevant trim. Include an exposed section so the actual groove and core can be reviewed. Keep the mock-up identification linked to the quotation and intended room use.

Set the viewing conditions before judging the joint

Place the mock-up in the planned orientation and review it under representative lighting. Side lighting can make differences in plane or texture more noticeable, so describe the lighting rather than relying on a single phone photograph. Record the agreed viewing position and what is acceptable to the project team. Do not invent a universal allowable gap or flatness tolerance from a catalog rendering.

Separate the visual joint from the fixing detail

The reviewed close-joint catalog illustrates a grooved panel arrangement and a concealed connector. That drawing is useful for identifying the system, but it is not a full installation manual. Confirm connector reference, substrate preparation, fixing method, fastener spacing and movement requirements in the project detail. Ask who approves the detail and who is responsible for site installation.

Include at least one difficult transition

A flat two-panel sample may look convincing while leaving a door reveal or corner unresolved. Choose a transition that matters to the project: an outside corner, skirting termination, headboard return or access panel. Record how the decorative face ends and how the cut edge is protected. Confirm that a service panel can still open where required; a continuous visual surface must not hide necessary maintenance access.

Keep a short approval record

Record the panel series, finish reference, connector, trim, sample date, drawing revision and unresolved points. Photograph the front, rear, cut section and transition without changing the appearance. If the proposed product or detail changes, review the affected part again. An approved mock-up is a coordination reference; it does not replace project-required test documentation or a written supply specification.

Use the result to complete the order brief

Transfer the accepted details to the wall schedule and component list. Define the quantity of panels, connectors and trims independently; do not assume they are included together. Request the close-joint series and use the junction planning checklist to organize the missing site information. Sample availability, charges and courier arrangements remain subject to confirmation.

Procurement questions

Does close-joint mean completely invisible joints?

No. The term describes the visual and connection direction. The actual reveal and acceptance criteria must be agreed for the selected assembly.

Can one mock-up approve every room?

Only if the relevant construction, finish and details are genuinely the same and the project team accepts that scope. Different junctions may need separate review.
